On Thursday, December 29, 1960 at about 0730 hours, Washington State Patrol Trooper Wes Whittenberg and Trooper D. M. Wolslegel were handling a collision scene on Highway 99 on the Stillaguamish River Bridge, about 15 miles north of Marysville.  Both troopers were assigned to the Sedro Woolley detachment.

There was heavy fog in the area and the bridge deck had ice in places.  A vehicle driven by Dr. Janet M. Whitmore of Mukilteo, hit a patch of ice and struck both men.

Trooper Wolslegel suffered a broken leg and Trooper Whittenberg died from massive internal injuries at the scene.

Patrolman Whittenberg served the Washington State Patrol for 10 years.  He is survived by his wife.
