On July 27, 1957, Lewis County Deputy Runke was attacked by inmates inside the Lewis County Jail as he passed out dinner.
Three inmates suddenly attacked him with a broom handle and hot coffee.
Deputy Runke remained hospitalized for several months before succumbing to his injuries on September 19, 1957.
