On Sunday, July 26, 1891, Deputy George Poor of the King County Sheriff’s Office went to Skagit County to assist a federal customs inspector. Customs was investigating the report of illegal Chinese immigrants who had been smuggled into Washington from Canada.
After Deputy Poor and the inspector took the group of immigrants into custody, they escorted them back into Sedro-Woolley. As they conducted the escort, another customs inspector ambushed Deputy Poor and the inspector in a case of mistaken identity.
Deputy Poor died from gunshot wounds.
