Officer Michael Marshall was shot while questioning a man at a disturbance call. Despite several warnings, the man refused to remove his hands from his pockets as Marshall and Officer Don Eddy were attempting to talk to him. He suddenly pulled out a handgun from one of his pockets and the officers took cover as the suspect fled down an alley. Both officers chased the subject, who ran from behind a carport and shot Marshall in the head. Officer Eddy returned fire and struck the suspect twice. Eddy began handcuffing the suspect when the man suddenly pulled another gun out of his other pocket and shot him in the groin. Eddy took control of the suspect before beginning CPR on Marshall, who was taken to a local hospital and then flown to Harborview Hospital in Seattle where he died the following morning. The suspect was in the same hospital in critical condition. In February 2000, the suspect was convicted of Marshall’s murder and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. He was sentenced to an additional 36 years in prison for the attempted murder of Officer Don Eddy.
Officer Marshall served the Omak Police Department for 11 years. He is survived by his wife, son, daughter, mother, stepfather, and sister.
