On Wednesday, February 17, 1926, Pend Oreille County Game Warden Edward Jarisch was shot and killed by two poachers who were hunting deer in Pend Oreille County.
Warden Jarisch approached the two juvenile suspects when one of them pointed a rifle at him and threatened to kill him. He decided to leave the area and attempt the arrest at a later date. As he was walking away, the suspect shot him in the back of his neck, severing his spinal cord.
The boys were later arrested at their father’s farm.
*Note: New historical evidence was discovered in 2022 that reflected Edward’s last name is spelled “Jarisch”. This record has been updated to honor the correct spelling.
