On Sunday, August 29, 1943, Game Warden Sherman Handron of the Washington Department of Wildlife was shot and killed while contacting a suspect who was transporting illegal elk meat.
The incident occurred in the Humptulips District of the state on the Olympic Peninsula. Game Warden Handron had been conducting an investigation of the suspect. He had a search warrant for the truck when he contacted the suspect and was shot twelve times.
