On Friday, August 3, 1923, Zillah Marshal William Hillyer was shot and killed by a known suspect who had a longstanding feud with the Hillyer family.
The incident occurred at a local tavern. The suspect had tracked down Marshal Hillyer where he shot him with a shotgun.
The suspect was acquitted of murder.
