Captain Dave Martin, current training officer for Yakima County Fire District 5, was raised as a "cop's kid". His dad, Jack "Griff" Martin was Dave's best friend, his hunting/fishing buddy, and a sometimes a source of annoyance during Dave's teen years.
On August 9, 1988, Dave's life was forever altered. While Officer Griff was assisting in the arrest of a fleeing subject, his heart forever stopped beating during the struggle. The ensuing weeks were filled with grief, anger, and lack of support for 19 year old Dave, his younger sister, and mom.
Support for the fallen officer's family was in its infancy, leaving Dave to struggle through the funeral and beyond with little support and guidance.
Dave worked his way up through the ranks in the volunteer world and also spent 7 years as a reserve deputy in Whatcom County. In 2001 Dave moved to Yakima County taking a job as training captain. Today, Dave is married to his wife, TJ, and has 4 interesting children, 21 year old married step daughters Kaneata and Madison, 19 year old step son, Seth, who works in Lynden, and the joy of their life, 10 year old Drake, who they adopted at age 5. Drake has many special needs and is the happiest kid you will ever meet!
Dave is proud to serve on the board for the Behind the Badge Foundation to continue to support LEO's and hope for that their families never suffer the aloneness and despair he felt when his dad was killed.
